“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.” – Shakuntala Devi
Intent
At Westbury Junior School, we aim to provide a curriculum that is accessible to all and enables every child to reach their potential. Our lessons are creative and engaging, supporting children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas and with other areas of their learning, language and their lives.
We promote a mastery approach to teaching and learning, (by following the White Rose scheme) and ensure there is broad and balanced coverage of the National Curriculum. Number is at the very heart of our curriculum and children learn to reason, problem-solve and become fluent across all objectives and areas of mathematics. Children’s learning is supported with a variety of concrete and pictorial models to develop their understanding of abstract concepts. Content is taught alongside appropriate vocabulary and opportunities for oracy are maximised. We aim to minimise barriers to learning and improve consistency by using methods and practices also used at Westbury Infant School.
