Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Brings Play to Life at Westbury Junior School
At Westbury Junior School, our commitment to the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme has transformed playtimes into exciting opportunities for children to learn, grow and thrive. By providing a rich variety of play experiences, including loose parts, imaginative play, construction, den building and creative exploration, pupils are encouraged to be active, independent and collaborative.
The impact has been overwhelmingly positive. Children are more engaged during breaktimes, with fewer behaviour incidents and increased opportunities to develop important social skills. Pupils are working together to solve problems, negotiate roles, share ideas and support one another through imaginative and cooperative play.
OPAL has also strengthened friendships across year groups, helping children to build confidence, resilience and communication skills in a fun and inclusive environment. Playtimes are now a valued part of the school day, where every child has the opportunity to let their imagination flourish while developing the life skills that will support them both in and beyond the classroom.
Through OPAL, we are creating a happier, more inclusive playground where every child has the opportunity to let their light shine.
