Writing at Westbury CE Junior School
At Westbury CE Junior School, we believe that reading and writing are essential life skills. We aim for every child to become a confident, independent and capable writer, ready for the next stage of their education.
Our writing curriculum is closely linked to high-quality texts and animations, giving children rich experiences, vocabulary and knowledge to inspire their own writing.
We teach the foundations of writing—spelling, handwriting, grammar, punctuation and sentence construction—alongside composition. Children are supported through a slow-release approach, moving from teacher modelling and guided practice towards independent writing.
Pupils learn to write for a range of purposes: to inform, persuade, instruct and entertain, and apply their writing skills across the wider curriculum.
We teach children that good writing takes time. They learn to plan, draft, edit, revise, proofread and present their work, developing resilience and pride in their writing.
Through careful assessment and adaptive teaching, we identify and respond to individual needs. Where additional support is required, targeted intervention helps pupils develop the skills they need to achieve the same ambitious outcomes as their peers.
Our ambition is for every child to leave Westbury CE Junior School as a confident writer, equipped to flourish in secondary school and beyond.
